How To Guarantee Your Success With Affiliate Marketing – The 80/20 Rule

In this article, I will share the secret that all successful affiliate marketers used to build their business but, very seldom share with the public, “That secret is the 80/20 Rule.” Proper Promotion is the Guarantee to Affiliate Marketing Success.  Additionally, I will share with you several training videos on free promotion sources. Keep reading and at the end, I will reveal the two best promotional sources and suggest training for these sources as well.

The old adage “Content is King” is no longer true

I say “Content is no longer king,” tongue-in-cheek. Of course, there is no substitute for well researched, informative, helpful and opinionated content and lots of it on your website. Content is the first secret to affiliate marketing success. But, Content Promotion is the second secret to success in online marketing. The reason I say that promotion is the second secret to success is the fact that there are approximately One and a half Billion (1.5 billion) websites and blogs on the internet as of the writing of this post. That is one website for every seven people on planet Earth. The website Hosting Facts estimates that over 4 million blog posts are published every day and the figure is growing. This is an insane amount of content! “The 80/20 Rule” is the new key for success in Affiliate Market is the 80/20 Rule.

What is the 80/20 Rule?

The 80/20 Rule states “Promotion is the King. ” Write less content, promote your content more.” 20% of your time is spent writing quality long form, helpful, practical, entertaining, awe-inspiring and credible content and 80% of your time are spent promoting the content that you have written. This rule primarily applies to well-established websites which have tons of content already, however it is never too early to start promoting your content. I encourage beginners to promote as well.

Here is why Promotion of Your Content is so Important

With so much content on the internet, it is almost impossible to be found when you rely on organic search alone. It is absolutely critical that you spend a majority of your time on promotion in order to stand out from the crowd and get eyeballs on your content and affiliate links.

Two types of Promotion

There are two categories of content promotion and they are Paid and Free advertising.

Paid promotion being Google Absence, Bing Ad, Promoted Posts, Display Ads, Social Media Ads, Sponsored Ads on other authors posts, re-targeting, etc. All of these types of ads require a steep learning curve, a healthy monetary investment, a lot of trial and error experimentation. Paid promotion is best left for advanced internet marketer.

Free promotion includes but is not limited to Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, Linkedin, YouTube, Media Groups, Quora, Reddit, Forums/ Communities, guest Posting, Podcast Interviews, partnerships with others in related niches, webinars, email marketing, ask happy customers to leave comments, share your content and write reviews, updating your website content regularly, build relationships with more successful bloggers in your niche by offering a free service in exchange for an ad or sponsorship and last but not least quality and consistent branding. Use every opportunity to get your name/content out there. However, do not spam. Promote your content according to the rules of the platform.

When I say “use every opportunity to get your name/content out there”, it is best to start with one type of promotion and master it and when you start to get some traffic juice and sales then choose another promotion type master it, rinse and repeat

Quora – The Secret Weapon Of Free Traffic

Quora is the best and simplest promotion strategy to begin with.

What is Quora?

Wikipedia describes Quora as:

Quora (/Kwo:ra/) is an American question-and-answer website where questions are asked, answered, and edited by Internet users in the form of opinions.”

There are questions about every possible topic imaginable. For questions that relate to your niche and provide helpful valuable answers. When appropriate, link to helpful posts on your blog and well as helpful posts of other bloggers.

Do not spam by posting affiliate links! This will get you banned immediately.

With time, you will begin to establish yourself as somewhat of an expert and you will begin to get traffic to your blog or YouTube Channel.

The best practice for Quora is to answer 5 questions per day. This should take about one hour. Let me repeat myself “Do not post affiliate links within your answers, do mention your website occasionally but, only once in about every 10 answers. This way you will not get your account banned.

Pinterest – A Great Traffic Source For Bloggers

Pinterest is another Free Traffic Source.

Here is what Suzi Whitford of How to Start a Mom Blog say of Pinterest:

“As a consumer, when you’re on Pinterest, you’re planning future birthday parties, a dinner for a special occasion or a new wardrobe.

For bloggers, Pinterest is gold.

Consumers are looking blog posts on Pinterest, They want your recipe on the best chicken pot pie. They’re looking for your top tips for new moms. They want to find your blog.”}

Paul Scrivens is another trusted Pinterest Free Traffic expert and here is what he says:

“Pinterest success always starts with ONE person clicking on a pin of yours and visiting your site (blog), if they like what they see and they want to save it, then they will.

If they don’t like what they see then they will move on.

It’s very easy to forget this fact. If you can’t get one person to save your pins because they love your content, then how do you expect to get 1000s of people to save your pins?

So, before you even bother with Pinterest you need to take a look at the value that you are creating(on your blog) and be honest with your self.

There are two questions you need to ask yourself when looking at your site (blog).

1. Is my content valuable enough that people will want to save it?

2. Is my content something that people are searching for?

When you nail these two things, then finding success on Pinterest becomes a lot easier.”}

Promote Your Content on Instagram

If you have been around social media for a while you may know that Instagram is owned by Facebook. This, of course, makes Instagram a power player on the internet.

Depending on your niche, Instagram is maybe an excellent source of free traffic for your blog.

To determine of Instagram would be a good fit for your niche simply create an Instagram account and do a little research for your niche.

Search inside Instagram for your competitors. See what they are doing and if it looks like they are having success with Instagram, then you should start to experiment.

Take what you have learned from your competitors and put your own spin on it. Interject your personality, style, philosophy, and humor.

Facebook

The problems with Facebook is that there is usually no Buyer Intent. Most people are not on Facebook to buy things. They are just there to waste time. I have never been a big fan of Facebook for the promotion of my affiliate marketing business.

However, many people swear that Facebook Groups are beneficial. As far as Facebook Groups are concerned I think it depends on your niche. Some niche probably will benefit from Facebook. You must do your own research to determine if Facebook will be a viable promotional source for your particular niche.

Use Twitter To Drive Free Traffic To Your Blog/Website

Do not neglect the power of Twitter! Twitter is a powerful traffic generation tool that is often overlooked by bloggers.

Ensure your profile on Twitter links to your website and add URL to your profile.

Start with premium quality content, optimize it properly for search engines. Choose one of the promotional sources that I have shared above, put the training into actions once you have mastered it chose another promotional source and do the same.

Get comfortable creating video to promote your content. Keep in mind that there are various methods of creating a video. You do not have to be in front of the camera unless you choose.

You cover some great sources of traffic in this article and I have to agree with you on the 80/20 rule. 

Neil Patel definitely has made a name for himself as an authority in the B2B niche and has a lot of information to help other marketers, some of his methods however are questionable like “income school suggests”

Apart from SEO, I have been using Facebook and Pinterest for promoting my content, so I’ll need to look at the other promotion channels you have described.

I must admit, I almost didn’t continue reading when I saw your subtitle that content is king is no longer true.   Yet, fortunately, you addressed that right off.  You was saying that tongue in cheek.   I am glad.  If some one writes garbage, it does not matter how much promotion you do, it is still garbage.  

I have yet to try Quora.  I need to check it out.    I do like Pintrest and I think my target audience likes Pintrest.  So, I appreciate you sharing the Pintrest tips.  

Since it is impossible to be a “master” in all forms of social media, I am trying to decide which would be better to pursue next:  YouTube or Instagram.   

As you mentioned, YouTube is the second most used search engine.  Yet, lately as a user, I am becoming more disillusioned with YouTube.   The advertising seems to have increased.   I also miss the old version of the recommended videos.   Once upon a time, if I watched a  Journey music video, for instance, YouTube would provide a list of other Journey videos for me to watch.   

Lately, it provides me a list of videos based on the history of my video watching.   For example, when I wanted to see another Journey video, it gave me horse training videos.    I didn’t want horse training videos when I was interested in music.    

So, decisions, decisions on choosing the best ways to promote our websites to guarantee success.

I really have never heard of the 80/20 rule, other than in the dieting and fitness world. I am one that has been struggling to write as much as I can, and sometimes I find that I have used fluff words just to get an article longer.

This is so much relief to understand that I can write less and promote more. I believe with this strategy, the quality of content will also improve.

Yeah, this definitelly needs to be done in a smooth and proper way. When promoting your website your main purpose should be to help your audience and build a relationship with them, rather than try to sell them your site. Personally I will tend to be thrown off when I see people answering on Quora for example by obviously promoting their own business, even when their answer goes against common sense and other well-written scientific answers. People want facts from experts, not biased opinions.

I really enjoyed your post, it is full of information and great tips for anyone trying to promote their website whether via SEO or via Social Media.  I especially liked the included video training for Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest, excellent!  Also your explanation of the 80/20 rule is very interesting and I tend to agree with you that promotion of content via social media and paid advertising would be the ideal way to get the most traffic, however some of us humble Affiliate Marketers are not at the point of being able to pay for traffic so we are forces to be happy with the Organic Traffic Methods.  I do appreciate your post as it gives great information, that I will remember when I am able to go the paid traffic route.  Thanks for sharing your port.

Very useful list!  I have bookmarked your post because I want to go back and spend some more time watching it.  I did watch the Quora video, as I regularly answer Quora questions.  I also do quite a bit with Pinterest, so want to watch those videos as well.

One thing about Quora:  On the little question form, under my name is my web address.  That way people know that I’m answering a question from my particular niche.  I do put a link to one of my posts if it fits the subject matter of the question.  I don’t use affiliate links, but put a post link from my website on maybe one in eight answers.  I have not been banned.

I think you are right.  Having good content is vital, but if no one reads it, what good does it do you?  You have to get it in front of people, any way you can.  I’m still working on that one.
